In my previous post I told you how I've been doing a "little" maintenance to my music catalogue. During this musical journey I've been "forced" to listen to a good portion of my music collection! I use the word FORCED jokingly but there's some underlying reality to it's use! Going through +10K songs is a task to say the least but, at least these theories have come from it! Either way, now to why you clicked this post in the first place, the theory!
Unlike Hip-Hop you can't point a finger at a particular person who killed R&B (well you can but that's an entirely different post). No fingers will be pointed at people in this post unless they are directed at a screen with a messaging service, swipe app, or an online dating platform! Yep, ONLINE Dating killed the R&B Slow Jam!
There is an obvious deviation in R&B music content that aligns with the adoption of online dating and the transition away from voice to voice communication! The theory is that with the reduction in voice communication there's been a reduction in mood music. If you're an old head (over 35), the role music played in the relationships of your youth is undeniable. If you're lucky enough not to have experienced the online version of courting, here's a little perspective. As of 2015...
From a guy's perspective, the music selection would serve as the backdrop to those late night telephone conversations. The music would literally set the tone of the conversation and subliminally said all the things that you may not have had the confidence, nerve or ability to verbalize. Music also played a huge role in the bedroom in the form of "sextapes" (pre Kardashian definition) the right mix of music would dictate the session you and your partner were about to embark on! Realistically, outside of alcohol, music was the social lubricant that got things poppin!
If you're over 30 think about where the following songs/groups/albums take you...
Janet Jackson - Anytime Anyplace
I could list tracks on this topic ALL DAY but there's a few carrots to take you deeper down the rabbit hole.
Jodeci - Forever My Lady (Pretty much anything)
Jagged Edge - Walked out of heaven (Most of their catalogue)
Keith Sweat - How deep is your love (Most of his catalogue)
Mary J Blige - Share My world Album
*R. Kelly - TP 2000
Even Rap & Hip-Hop Artist got in on the Love/Sensual music...
Common - Come Close
LL Cool J - Too many To name
I know there are more but I'm drawing a blank...
Take this music and our parents generation's music like this (Marvin, Isley Brothers, Teddy P) away and marriages don't exist, children wouldn't have been born, and certain ideas of love and passion don't really exist. So, yeah... You want a resurgence of 90's quality R&B it's time to start using those minutes on your phone plan to communicate more and stop relying on messaging, SMS, and apps to communicate with those you are feelin! Even this blog would have been better as a conversation... These words just can't convey they way I'm feeling about this topic right now! Maybe this emoji will help ?...
