In my previous post I told you how I've been doing a "little" maintenance to my music catalogue. During this musical journey I've been "forced" to listen to a good portion of my music collection! I use the word FORCED jokingly but there's some underlying reality to it's use! Going through +10K songs is a task to say the least but, at least these theories have come from it! Either way, now to why you clicked this post in the first place, the theory!
Unlike Hip-Hop you can't point a finger at a particular person who killed R&B (well you can but that's an entirely different post). No fingers will be pointed at people in this post unless they are directed at a screen with a messaging service, swipe app, or an online dating platform! Yep, ONLINE Dating killed the R&B Slow Jam!
There is an obvious deviation in R&B music content that aligns with the adoption of online dating and the transition away from voice to voice communication! The theory is that with the reduction in voice communication there's been a reduction in mood music. If you're an old head (over 35), the role music played in the relationships of your youth is undeniable. If you're lucky enough not to have experienced the online version of courting, here's a little perspective. As of 2015...
From a guy's perspective, the music selection would serve as the backdrop to those late night telephone conversations. The music would literally set the tone of the conversation and subliminally said all the things that you may not have had the confidence, nerve or ability to verbalize. Music also played a huge role in the bedroom in the form of "sextapes" (pre Kardashian definition) the right mix of music would dictate the session you and your partner were about to embark on! Realistically, outside of alcohol, music was the social lubricant that got things poppin!
If you're over 30 think about where the following songs/groups/albums take you...
Janet Jackson - Anytime Anyplace
I could list tracks on this topic ALL DAY but there's a few carrots to take you deeper down the rabbit hole.
Jodeci - Forever My Lady (Pretty much anything)
Jagged Edge - Walked out of heaven (Most of their catalogue)
Keith Sweat - How deep is your love (Most of his catalogue)
Mary J Blige - Share My world Album
*R. Kelly - TP 2000
Even Rap & Hip-Hop Artist got in on the Love/Sensual music...
Common - Come Close
LL Cool J - Too many To name
I know there are more but I'm drawing a blank...
Take this music and our parents generation's music like this (Marvin, Isley Brothers, Teddy P) away and marriages don't exist, children wouldn't have been born, and certain ideas of love and passion don't really exist. So, yeah... You want a resurgence of 90's quality R&B it's time to start using those minutes on your phone plan to communicate more and stop relying on messaging, SMS, and apps to communicate with those you are feelin! Even this blog would have been better as a conversation... These words just can't convey they way I'm feeling about this topic right now! Maybe this emoji will help ?...
You have to love people who are TRYING their best to be a part of "The Culture" but don't quite have the understanding. So couple of weeks a go during my morning scroll through Instagram and saw this guy...
I've covered the face of the person to mitigate putting them on BLAST but, if you recognize this guy please direct him to the following commentary. Crosspollination of brands in an outfit is considered tacky BUT, putting together teams from different cities is a BIG NO-NO. For those of you who don't recognize the teams on display here, the hat is from Oakland Raiders an NFL team and the shirt is from the Atlanta Hawks an NBA team... I feel where he was headed with this outfit but before putting on a fit just because the colors match, make sure you understand what you're repping!
After going down the path of doing maintenance to my DJ library, I've come to the conclusion that the 3rd verse of most (damn near all) songs is TRASH! The only exception to this is in the case of artist collaborations, Duos like ATCQ or Outkast and groups like Wu-Tang. Otherwise, if you're part of a group and you find yourself slotted in the 3rd verse or beyond, sorry but, you're the weak link. Take a bit of advise, learn to DJ or hone your skills as a hype man because you're just that extra guy taking up studio time!
I didn't come to this conclusion hastily... While doing catalogue maintenance, I've easily listened to 2500 songs spanning all genres and years. On this ill advised and time consuming music maintenance journey I started with the newest music and worked my way backwards. (man... music after 2013 is mind numbing AF) Initially I tried to blame trash 3rd verses on new-age music but, as I approached the 90BPM range of the late 90's early 2000's portion of my catalogue it dawned on me that the 3rd verse problem was WAY worse than I initially expected!
Here's your challenge, go to a song that you feel like you know pretty well. Check to see if it has a true 3rd verse... Ah.. Ha ha ha ha... If you had to check and didn't know for sure, that means that verse is TRASH or doesn't exist! 🤣 If the song doesn't have a true 3rd verse the artist was smart! If it does, take a listen to the song! There's no doubt you'll be able to sing along to the 1st verse, you'll know most of the words on the 2nd verse but when that 3rd verse drops you quickly turn into Jeezy or Offset. Welcome to the ad-libs only section of the song! The reason you only know the ad-libs of this verse is. Because. It's. Trash.
I mean there are exceptions to every rule but that exception is reserved for artist like Biggie, Pac, Nas, Jay-z, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole (and a handful of others). However, even the greats fall victim to TRASH 3rd verses sometimes. I'm not sure who came up with the DJ methodology of playing a MAX of 2 verses (or 2 chorus, which ever comes first) but, there was some wisdom in that decision! Tonight in your prayers, thank GOD (or who ever you pray to) for all the DJ's that take you out of songs before the 3rd verse!
Just for fun, I might put together a mix that features nothing but 3rd verses just to torment you and... to prove my point! 😂
Blog #1... I guess we'll see where this blog thing leads... I'm thinking I like video better but we'll see! Stay tuned!
